Attempt is made to comprehend the term “democratization of education”. The author analyzes emergent in recent decades the interpretation of this concept. It has been revealed that attention of researchers is mainly attracted by subjective section of this issue which is manifested in interpretation of the concept of democratization of education. This concept is understood as equality of educational opportunities and freedom of self-determination of individuals, while systemic and structural aspect of this problem, that uncovers connection between educational institution and others structural components of the social system, and above all with culture, instrument of legitimization of which it is. It is necessary to bridge the gap between micro-level of social reality, in the mode of which individuals exist and in the context of which the study of democratization of education is conducted, and the macro-level in the context of which functioning and interaction of the main social institutions, i.e. education, culture, economy, etc. In the light of this, traditional thesis on democratization of education should be revised and supplemented, that in addition to inequality in educational opportunities of individuals should take into account non-equilibrium position of various structures (cultural-ethnic, social-class) in relation to educational system.
