The article deals with reasons for popularity of university rankings, it describes types of responses to the rankings both of individual universities and entire national systems of higher education. Proven is that not all measures taken by universities to improve their rank positions, may optimize their performance. The conclusion is that rankings rather tend to encourage competitiveness among universities, than to evaluate quality of their performance.
