Examined is the problem of coming into being of definitions “competence” and “competency”. Presented is etymologist analysis of the named definitions, shown are their components and contradictions. Also determined is actuality of a new in pedagogical space competence, i.e. noxological. Substantiated is pre-determination of interest of society in formation of the named competency.
