The article is dedicated to the professional biography of Irina A. Zymnyaya, a distinguished scholar and academic, Doctor of Psychological Science, Professor and Full Member of the Russian Academy of Education. Her versatile contribution both to the fundamental research of speech activity, verbal communication and language teaching and to the methodology of higher and сontinuous education is analysed, with a special focus on her original theory of a person’s general culture, moral education, a competence-based approach, and research in higher education. Her role in mentoring new generations of scholars and ensuring the implementation of rigorous scientific standards in educational research is also discussed.
