Researched is the theme of practical essence of professional competence of teacher. Proceeding from features of the modern world, it is noted in the article, that current state of practical implementation of competence approach in educational process wouldn’t be considered as satisfactory. On the basis of generalized analysis of works in the field of competence, causes of this phenomenon, as well as practical essence of competence of professional activity are defined. Also presented are conclusions, concerning practical implementation of competence approach in educational process.
