Improving education in Russia leads to the need to develop modern approaches to training students in engineering fields and ensuring that graduates’ qualifications meet the requirements of professional standards. Against the backdrop of the transition of the education system from bachelor's, specialist and master’s degrees to basic and specialized higher education, one of the important tasks is to rethink the qualification levels assigned to graduates and the conditions for promotion of employees of technical enterprises, as well as the qualification requirements for such specialists in various positions. The article examines the levels of education in engineering specialties at the world’s leading universities, and also analyzes Russian and foreign qualification systems. Approaches to improving engineering education in Russia are proposed based on professional standards and the experience of foreign universities. A possible way to distinguish between graduates of basic higher education who were trained in four-year and five-and-a-half-year programs is indicated. The competencies that need to be developed in students in the process of studying in technical areas are noted to facilitate subsequent integration into the labor sphere in their specialty and ensure that the knowledge and skills of graduates meet current industry requirements.
