The priorities and directions for the development of student science in higher education are explored. A positive assessment was given to the use of the experience of the Sirius Educational Center and the All-Russian Youth Forum “iVolga”, the purpose of which is to introduce young people to research activities from school. The practice of organizing the forum “The First Step into Science”, improving the infrastructure of scientific, scientific-technical and scientific-innovative activities, attracting students to publishing activities, developing grants and patents at the Volga State Technological University (hereinafter referred to as Volgatekh) is summarized. The system of continuous education is developing, mechanisms for implementing the innovative competence of graduates are being formed. And as a positive effect, their participation in the competition under the “Umnik” program takes place; over its entire period, more than 270 projects were recognized as winners. Every year, the university hosts more than 15 scientific and practical conferences at various levels, at which more than 15 thousand reports have been presented by students over the last 6 years alone. Against this background, according to the authors, it is advisable to involve students in fundamental scientific research, participation in publications of journals from the list of Higher Attestation Commissions, Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus, increasing their scientometric indicators as part of the activities of the Russian national project “Science and Universities”.
