The federal program “Support and Promotion of the Russian Language Abroad” has become a new milestone in cooperation between Russia and Africa. Russian pedagogical universities coordinate the work of the “Centers for Open Education in Russian and Russian Language Teaching”, as well as participate in scientific research, the results of which are aimed at improving Russian language teaching in specific African countries, taking into account the socio-cultural and ethnopsychological characteristics of their inhabitants. Shadrinsk State Pedagogical University carries out cooperation with the Republic of Madagascar. To design the Russian language education system directly in Madagascar, it is necessary, among other things, a comprehensive analysis of the education system in the country. In the course of theoretical and empirical research, the authors of the article came to the conclusion that Madagascar's education is based on the French model, but it has not undergone significant development over the entire period of its existence. Each of the levels of education in Madagascar has its own characteristics and pursues certain goals. The challenges that education in the republic constantly faces include low levels of funding, poverty, lack of teaching staff, and poor methodological support. All this has an impact on the development of the public education system and should be taken into account when designing educational routes in the “Centres for open education”.
