On–line instruction is treated as thenew information technology of teaching andthefactor determining progress of US higher education. Recession is a big motivator to practise new technologies in university education widely and to drive more adult students to take on–line courses. This paper examines different problems of on–line education at American university: psychological and pedagogical, teaching and organizational, technical, financial.
