The article discusses current issues related to the fundamentalization of higher education, the transition to a new national system of higher education and the training of a new generation of engineering personnel. Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), being an active participant in pilot projects to improve the higher education system and ‘Fundamental Disciplines’. Developed and implemented at MAI the new modular structure of the BVI and Special Educational institutions fully ensures the solution of issues of practice orientation and fundamental learning, including the allocation of separate modules: fundamental (by field of knowledge) and practices. At the same time, as part of the pilot projects, measures are being taken to create a new training environment for engineering personnel and create a flexible educational model that ensures the transformation of educational programs based on an analysis of industry needs. An urgent task at present is to improve the quality of teaching fundamental disciplines. Therefore, in this article it is proposed to consider issues related to the methodology and features of teaching fundamental disciplines based on a systematic approach, in particular, by the example of teaching the general engineering discipline ‘Electrical Engineering and Electronics’. However, it is not only about updating the content of educational programs, but above all about creating conditions for the formation of such comprehensive competencies among students that will allow young professionals to more effectively implement their work functions. The article proposes a scheme for the transition to a new model of teaching the fundamental (general engineering) discipline ‘Electrical Engineering and Electronics’. At the same time, the factors influencing the improvement of learning efficiency are considered in detail. The process of selecting research project topics by students, its methodological support and the evaluation procedure, taking into account the acquisition of practical skills by students, are particularly highlighted.
