Analyzed is the problem of social and philosophical understanding of student volunteer activity. Philosophical foundations of volunteer activity are considered and applied aspects of realization of social activity of students in volunteer work are revealed. Motives and strategies of student participation in volunteer activity are analyzed, and social prospects of this phenomenon are considered. Also results of four-year study of motives, problems and acquired skills in the process of volunteer activity of students in universities in the city of Irkutsk are presented.
