Abstract. This study is relevant due to the need to transform libraries in the era of open science and digitalization of research, which challenges their traditional role. The aim of the study is to analyze key areas of transformation, identify new functional models, and assess strategic adaptation prospects based on the experience of Europe and Russia.

Methods include comparative statistical analysis, development scenario modeling, content analysis, and systematization of empirical data. The novelty of the study lies in its comprehensive examination of the evolution of libraries from repositories to active operators of scholarly communication. For the first time, European trends and Russian models are compared. A key paradigm shift is identified: a shift toward viewing the library as an integrated partner in the research lifecycle.

Conclusions. Transformation represents a strategic reassembly of library identity. Successful adaptation requires hybrid models, the development of new competencies (data management, research management), and a shift from a storage logic to active participation in the creation and dissemination of knowledge.
