The intent of this article was to study the interpretation of the language problem in neo-positivism in M.K. Mamardashvili’s lectures on European philosophy in the 20th century — as well as to recognize the relevance of his conclusions for our understanding of the issue of language usage in modern culture. This topic has not been investigated enough in scientific literature. The object of our research is a body of M.K. Mamardashvili’s lectures published in Outline of Modern European Philosophy; this article is, naturally, the philosophical analysis of those lectures. This research has yielded a number of conclusions. Mamardashvili demonstrated that the goal of neo-positivists — construct the correct language of science relying on instruments of logic — is deterministic: they wanted to erase the influence of Nazi ideology on German science. Mamardashvili also showed convincingly that the radical formalization of the language of science serves to promote totalitarian practices in how people think and, generally, live. Mamardashvili articulated the problem of exploitation of language in culture — the problem derives from the necessity to preserve the two generative functions of language: enrichment of culture, and education and socialization of man. Mamardashvili’s theses can be correlated with Einar Haugen’s ecology of language — and used for conducting interdisciplinary research on preservation of language in culture.
