The formation of research skills among school students plays a key role in modern education, as it promotes the development of critical skills necessary for personal, academic and professional growth, as well as provides training for effective participation in the scientific and technical process. For the scientific and technological development of the country, the training of future scientists and specialists in the field of science and technology, capable of solving current problems of society, is a strategically important task. Despite numerous publications on this topic, this is the first time the problem has been considered in this way. The purpose of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing the formation of high school students’ readiness for scientific activity. To study the problem, a sociological study was conducted to assess the educational, personal and social conditions conducive to the development of research skills among high school students. The study involved 91 students in grades 8–11 of a general education institution. The geography of the study is a typical school in the Belgorod region. As a result of the research, the dynamic characteristics of changes in the level of research readiness have been identified and the barriers faced by students in the process of developing research skills have been identified. The results obtained can be used to popularize science among students and parents; in the work of general education institutions to create an educational environment necessary for the development of research competencies.; in the work of educational institutions of higher education to adjust admission strategies in accordance with the identified demand. The conclusions and recommendations of the conducted research can also be used for conducting subsequent sociological research.
