The article, based on historical studies, analyzes the medieval university as a new organizational form that unites the ancient liberal school and the medieval craft guild. It is shown, on the basis of sociological analysis, which social processes were launched by the ancient liberal school as a product of the ancient Greek aristocratic culture, and which by the medieval university as a new organizational form that unites an ancient liberal school and a medieval craft guild. In particular, the ancient liberal school launched, first, a social stratification by level of education and, second, an intellectualization of society, and the medieval university launched the process of democratization of education as well as a social mobility. The institutional mission of the following educational institutions is substantiated within the framework of historical and sociological analysis: the ancient liberal school, the medieval university and modern universities using liberal, research and service models.
