The content analysis method was used to review domestic and foreign literature reflecting various aspects of the problem of self-assessment in medical education and medical practice as a tool for the formation and development of professional competencies and professional and personal qualities of medical specialists. The literature review shows the importance of organizing training in systematic self-assessment of students and doctors at all stages of medical education and in medical practice. The forms of self-assessment, the goals of introducing self-assessment into the training programs for medical students, subjects of self-assessment, and conditions for increasing its accuracy are presented. The need to develop a methodology for modules providing for teaching self-assessment to students at all stages of continuous medical education is shown.
