The article is devoted to the analysis of the methodological apparatus of K. Burke and R. McKeon, which can be used in modern interpretations of historical and philosophical issues. The views and approaches of both authors were closely related to rhetorical practice, which can be considered a consequence of the “linguistic turn” in the philosophy of language that occurred at the beginning of the twentieth century. An attempt to analyze events from the perspective of bridging the gap between the “thing” and the “word” led scientists to the need to develop a rhetorical strategy that would combine objectively existing and subjectively perceived. Overcoming scientific and philosophical relativism, according to the authors, would serve to know the truth, better understand historical events and develop a common concept of mutual trust, contributing to the achievement of harmony between peoples. As a condition for mitigating intercultural and intercivilizational confrontation, R. McKeon considered the principle of “freedom of the spirit”, based on unbiased interpretations of the values of public consciousness, dedogmatizing the activities of social institutions and contributing to the conflict-free conceptualization of the very concept of “freedom”.

Keywords: rhetoric, communication, philosophy, values, ideal of freedom
