Purpose: Identification, description and analysis of frequently encountered communication barriers that are for a teacher in interaction with foreign students in an intermediary language. The materials of the analysis were the narrative experience of interaction in the intermediary language (English) between teachers and foreign students from Egypt, Yemen, India, the detailing of WhatsApp messages in the chat-support of 60 teachers by the university leadership.

Result. The most common communication barriers encountered by a teacher in interaction with foreign students in an intermediary language (English) are: cultural — 25.00%, psychological — 19.44%, interpersonal — 16.67%, adaptive —16.67, linguistic — 8.33%, physical — 8.33%, organizational — 5.56%. The most common barriers are cultural, psychological, interpersonal and adaptive. The hypothesis was partially confirmed.

The conducted research revealed the following trends. Teaching foreign students is a much more time-consuming process than teaching Russian students. It is necessary to form special components of the professional competence of teachers working with foreign students, since they face communication barriers and do not always realize their importance. It is necessary to teach a culture of awareness of barriers as a means for self-development, and the search for ways to overcome them through an algorithm of sequential actions, the use of heuristic prescriptions that set the direction of thinking and actions of the teacher, but do not give an accurate answer, through the implementation of pedagogical conditions in the university environment: the formation of tolerant competence of a teacher; the creation of an information and practical block of psychology of communication with foreign students; teaching skills to overcome stressful situations, self-regulation and stress tolerance; holding seminars, round tables for the exchange of information of an educational, methodological, organizational and methodological nature.
