Analyzed are basic problems of lecturing in philosophy in higher school under conditions of domination of mass culture and pragmatically focused outlook. Shown is positive function, which philosophy can carry out for the youth, and also elaborated are difficulties, which realization of this function is running against. In the author’s opinion, there is contradiction between culture-making potential of philosophy and professionally focused modern education. Philosophy is necessary for education in independent way of thinking and familiarizing with riches of culture, but not for training in concrete profession. Conclusion is made, that position of philosophy as educational subject in the system of higher education demands further workings and perfection of methodic, otherwise the task of development of philosophical thinking cannot be executed because of too large scale of efforts, demanded from the lecturer.

Key words: higher education, philosophy, education as social institute, lecturing in philosophy, modernity, outlook.
