The relevance of this article is connected with the peculiarities of the modern division of labor, as well as with the complexity of establishing the personal prospects of each growing person and the possibility of his professional self-realization. The aim of the work is to clarify the internal factors that determine professional orientation. The author believes that this is connected with the understanding of the value foundations of personal self-determination and the relationship between the requirements of the profession for the subject of choice and the personal characteristics who does not have experience in this field. This research aims to investigate the role of the main positions of choice related to the demand for a specialty and the abilities of the applicant. This study puts forward the hypothesis that these factors cannot be attributed to the subject’s conscious decision, since almost always something other than a profession is chosen. The professional self-determination does not end with admission to a certain field of study, but only begins at this stage. Moreover, it is stated that the choice is determined by a set of competencies formed ‘a priori’. The reasons for choosing a type of activity are considered, but it is assumed that they are primarily based on some other activities.

Keywords: education; subject of the choice, applicant, professional choice; value choice, professional self-determination
