Presented is analysis of the phenomenon of the city and features initiated by it lifestyle as one of leading factors, determining dynamics and vector of social historical development. Analyzed are various directions both in the context of sociological thought, and in frames of other humanitarian disciplines, devoted to the subject of the study. Reflected is priority role of social science in the research of studying theme. On the basis of historical material, shown is the role of cities in the process of transformation of social environment.
