Examined is the theme of activity of philanthropy societies in the Russian empire at the beginning of 20th century. In detail, characterized are the very philanthropist organizations, shown are spheres of their activity, and presented is their social composition, and also shown are portraits of their most active members. Traced are interconnections between state and philanthropist organizations before the 1st World War, i.e. in the period of most active period of economic development of Russia. Also shown is concrete role of philanthropist societies in the years of the 1st World War. Elaborated is general historical significance of philanthropy and philanthropist organizations foreshortening stimulation of social economic and cultural progress of the country.
