The article discusses the problem of engineering personnel training in connection with the statements of the Minister of Science and Higher Education V.N. Falkov on the transition to a new model of higher education. A comparison of the current system of higher education with the proposed one in the new model is carried out. The insignificance of the differences in these systems is shown. It is proposed to officially divide basic education into two stages with different periods of study: bachelor's degree and specialty. An excursion into the system of Soviet engineering education is carried out and its focus on practical professional activity is shown. It is proposed to use the activity-based nature of learning in the new model of higher education. Specific examples of the implementation of the educational process in a new ideology are given, in which the activities of students are productive, creative, and exploratory.

Keywords: higher education, engineering training, field of study, specialty, personnel training structure, activity-based approach, active teaching methods
