The article analyzes students’ ideas about the importance and relevance of the profession they chose when entering the university, and the expected degree of satisfaction of their abilities and capabilities from involvement in this particular type of activity. The problems of the expected professional self-realization of students are considered in the context of the necessary commitment of students to basic traditional values, while at the same time the state has (or creates) economic and socio-cultural conditions for securing young professionals in their chosen profession and minimizing the risk of disappointment in it in view of unfounded hopes. The article is based on the results of a sociological study on the topic: “Professional self-determination of Nizhny Novgorod student youth”, held in September-October 2024. The method of collecting information is a questionnaire survey of students of 1–5 courses of full–time departments of various fields of study of 5 leading universities in Nizhny Novgorod, n1230, of which 22.8% are boys and 77.2% are girls. The sample is targeted, quota based on gender, age, courses of study and universities of the city. The results of the study were processed using the SPSS-21 program. Based on the results of the author’s research, proposals were made to adjust youth policy in the field of career guidance, education and employment of modern student youth.
