Discussed is the problem of training student of higher educational institution in studying his cognitive activity, creating conditions, conducive to accumulation of knowledge and practical skills, and developing abilities for independent professional activity. The main means of obtaining knowledge in university is reading (scientific, educational, general cultural), instilling skills of independent, research work; serving as the basis of writing, speaking and listening, broadening one’s horizons, forming steady interest in working with a book. Reading serves as a source of acquiring knowledge, overcoming limitations of individual social experience, and makes it possible to update knowledge and improve oneself. The methodology of the study of reading as cultural practice allows the use of different reading techniques and methods, that do not contradict, but complement each other and form dynamically developing process, that reflects the reading system as a means of self-development, intellectual and emotional-spiritual formation of personality. The amount of information, consumed today, is so great, that even a slight improvement in reading efficiency would significantly improve the quality of training of future specialists.
