Analyzed is the notion of scientific school, and in connection with that presented are classification, forms, indications and principal characteristics of scientific schools. Noted is, that scientific school is being described as collective of scientists or as science direction. As a rule, scientific schools are being formed in universities, scientific research institutes, experimental and scientific organizations. But despite accumulated experience of national researches, devoted to analysis of scientific schools, there is still no single point of view as to definition of the notion of “scientific school”. Also presented is brief description of activity of scientific schools of Vologda scientific center of Russian academy of science.
