Presented is analysis of trends in development of scientific and technological progress. Analyzed are official materials of strategic character, i.e. “Prognosis of long-term socio-economic development of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030”, Decree of the president of the RF “On measures to implement the state policy in the area of education and science”, RF government decision “On approval of the state program of the Russian Federation on “Development of education in the years of 2013–2020”, etc. Also reflected is the role of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches to modern scientific research and the process of formation in educational organizations of innovative competences by teachers and students. Proposed is hypothesis about advisability of forming foundations of informatics in interdisciplinary engineering knowledge for problem-oriented areas of activity, as well as deeper and broader formulation and search of original and perspective decisions as to complex problems.

Key words: interdisciplinarity, fourth industrial revolution, cyber-physical system, information, model, information technology, informatics, competency, engineer.
