During the formation of a new post-industrial type of society, the study of the history of political culture becomes very relevant. This is necessary for a more complete analysis of its current state and development prospects. The article considers the approaches that have developed in the scientific literature to date, such as subjectivist, normative, complex and symbolic. They are presented in chronological order and with the application of a dialectical approach to the development of knowledge. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the contribution of sociologists to the study of political culture. Each approach has its own causes, its strengths and weaknesses, and even after some negation of the previous one at the subsequent stage of development of political culture research enriches the previous one. The approaches are considered from an ontological point of view and from the standpoint of studying the static and dynamic state of this phenomenon. The author’s definition of political culture is presented. In the future, studies of political culture will again concern its content, but using different approaches and achievements of other sciences, which is due to the state of research on this phenomenon and trends in the development of modern society.

Key words: political culture, history of research, history of the development of sociology.
