Described is experience of organizing research work of undergraduates — future designers. The authors believe, that despite difficulties in processing data from sociological studies, they are urgently needed in design practice. Sociological data help to differentiate consumer groups, taking into account their expectations and preferences. In cases of urgent need, designer should be able independently study his consumer, and for this fragments of sociological studies are included in master’s training of designers. The material in the article is illustrated by fragments of sociological research, carried out by undergraduates for several years. Obtained data was verified by bachelor students in the process of designing new interiors and furniture. For undergraduates, the experience gained will become especially valuable in their future professional activities, where it is not always possible to obtain necessary information from information sources, and ability to extract it from public practice and analysis of everyday life of person is required.

Keywords: sociological research, residential interior, design projecting, scientific work of undergraduates.
